Why So Many Women Over 50 Still Undervalue Their Expertise (and What To Do About It)

June 28, 20253 min read

Let’s be real for a second: If you’ve spent decades in corporate or managing real-life chaos like a pro (hello, family, caregiving, volunteering), then you’re sitting on a goldmine of untapped expertise—even if it doesn’t feel like it.

But here’s the kicker…
According to a
KPMG study, 75% of women in leadership roles have experienced imposter syndrome at some point.

Not beginners. Leaders.

Which means even women with resumes full of wins are out here second-guessing themselves.

And what does that cost us?

  • We stay in jobs that drain us.

  • We pass up clients we could help.

  • We undercharge or work for free.

  • We talk ourselves out of ideas that could change lives—including our own.

If any of that feels familiar, I want you to know something: It’s not that you lack skills. It’s that you’ve been taught to overlook the exact things that make you valuable.

So let’s fix that. Here’s how to start recognizing and using your real expertise—without waiting for another degree or a LinkedIn endorsement to tell you it’s okay.

Step 1: Write Your Skills Like a Boss—Not a Resume

Most women write their skills like they’re updating a LinkedIn profile. But what you want is a skills audit, not a job description.

Start here:

  • What problems have you solved repeatedly?

  • What processes or people do you manage without even thinking?

  • What do friends or coworkers always come to you for?

Don’t stop at “project management.” Be specific:
“Led a remote team of 12 during a merger and kept morale + productivity up.”
That’s a
money-making skill right there.

Step 2: Watch for What Feels Easy

You might think, “Well, that’s just common sense.” But what feels like “common sense” to you is not common to everyone. It’s likely your zone of genius—and it’s usually hiding in plain sight.

Ask yourself:

What do I do so well and so easily that I didn’t even count it as a real skill?

You’re probably brushing off your most monetizable gift because it comes naturally.

Step 3: Get a Confidence Boost from the Outside

Sometimes we need a mirror to see what’s really there.

Reach out to 3 people you trust and ask:

  • What do you think I’m amazing at?

  • When have you seen me at my best?

  • If you were introducing me to someone, what would you say I do?

Their answers will show you what you're projecting to the world—and it might be way more powerful than what you think.

Step 4: Own Your Story

You don’t need a viral moment or a huge brand to be seen as credible.

You just need a story. Your story.

The ups and downs, the pivots, the tough decisions, the wins that no one clapped for—those are the things that make people trust you. And in business, trust sells.

People buy from people who’ve been through what they’re going through—and made it to the other side.

Start thinking about how you’d tell someone where you started, what you’ve learned, and how that’s shaped the way you help others today.

Step 5: Start Helping—Now

Here’s the truth: You don’t need a fancy website or a 10-module course to start getting paid for what you know. You need to help one person solve one problem they care about.

Who’s already asking you for help or advice?
Could you:

  • Offer a 1-hour consultation?

  • Teach a workshop?

  • Host a live Q&A?

Don’t wait until everything is perfect.

Money loves momentum.

Just get in motion.
